Professor Farhat Yusuf holds a first class B.Sc. Honours and an M.A. in Statistics from the University of Punjab, and a Ph.D. in Demography from the Australian National University. His teaching and research interests encompass business demographics, consumer behaviour, medical demography and public health in general and ageing and women's health issues in particular.

Professor Yusuf  has held visiting appointments in prestigious institutions such as Princeton and Cornell universities in United States, City and Southampton universities in United Kingdom and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor Yusuf is a member of numerous national and international associations such as the Australian Population Association, the International Sociological Association and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP).  He is currently Chair of the IUSSP’s International Scientific Panel on Business Demography.  He was the President of International Sociological Association’s Research Committee on Sociology of Population (1999-2002) and also  National President of the Australian Population Association (1984-1986).

Apart from a very prominent research profile, Professor Yusuf has been consulting for a number of national and international organisations.  His clients have included the New South Wales Department of Education and Training, the United Nations Population Fund, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the U.S. Academy of Sciences.

Professor Yusuf is currently a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Marketing and Logistics and the International Journal of Internet Marketing and Advertising.  He is a Guest Editor for the Population Research and Policy Review’s Special Issue on  Business Demographics, to be published in mid-2010.

Professor Yusuf  has co-authored/edited two books, four book chapters and more than 100 research papers and technical reports.  His publications have appeared in academic journals such as Population Studies,  Journal of Biosocial Science, Journal of Population Research,  and the Australia and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has a special interest in analysing the household expenditure patterns in Australia and overseas. He has written numerous papers on this topic and has made presentations at marketing conferences in Australia and abroad.  His paper on household expenditure on alcohol in Australia (co-authored with Julian de Mayrick) won the “best paper” award at the  2008 British Academy of Marketing Conference in Aberdeen, Scotland.
