External
Water Accounting (2008-10): Funds received from the Water Accounting Standards Board (formerly the Water Accounting Development Committee) in respect of research undertaken by Mr. Edward Tello (PhD candidate) and I. This project utilises financial accounting principles and practices to report on Australian water resources, an approach unique to Australia. There are a number of areas to the project. Standards development has been undertaken by a team including the WADC, academics and consultants. Our primary role has been to visit various pilot sites who are working to implement the standard. We have visited sites in Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory and have developed issues papers for consideration by the Water Accounting Standards Board.
Sustainability education (2003-4): Funds received from Environment Australia to participate in an action research project to incorporate sustainability into accounting education. This project involved both embedding sustainability within an existing unit as well as incorporating sustainability principles within a new unit. The project was facilitated by the Australian Research Institute in Education for Sustainability, based at the Graduate School of the Environment at Macquarie University.
Internal
Ethics education (2009-10): Funds received from a University Priority grant (investigators are A/Prof. Maria Dyball, A/Prof. Sue Wright and I) for developing ethics education within the accounting curriculum. An important aspect of the project is to address the issue of orientating ethics education so as to encompass non-western ethical perspectives which are typically ignored in current accounting texts and accompanying pedagogy.
Social and Critical Research (2007-8): Funds received from a Macquarie University Strategic Support for Research Strengths grant to assist the Social and Critical Research in Accounting and Accountability Group. Various activities were supported, including data collection and a visit by an international Scholar in 2009.
