Special Consideration

Have I been awarded a supplementary exam?

All applications that have satisfactory coursework and attendance are considered but do not necessarily result in the granting of a supplementary exam

Have I been awarded a supplementary exam? Find out on Friday 11 December 2009.

It is each student’s responsibility to check this web notice.

Important Note: Supplementary Exams are held from 15th to 18th December 2009. Students who are awarded a supplementary exam must attend the exam, otherwise they risk failure in the relevant unit.

What is it about?

The Special Consideration process is for students who have been affected by an unavoidable disruption (for example, illness). It provides an official means for students to receive recognition of the interruption.

This process ensures that the Lecturers in Charge of units are made aware of unavoidable disruptions which have affected students, what aspects of the unit have been affected, and allows them to make any necessary adjustments (if warranted) to unit assessment.

What is the process?

It is important to note that students must submit their Special Consideration form within 5 days of the affected assessment or formal examination date.
  1. Students fill out the Special Consideration form (this includes a professional authority form if applicable). It can be downloaded online or obtained from the Student Enquiries Service.
  2. The form must be submitted to the Student Enquiries Service in the Lincoln Building.
  3. It is recommended that students also directly contact their Lecturer to notify them of the application for Special Consideration and ask what the effect is going to be.

How do I apply?

You must justify your request for special consideration with the relevant documents:

  1. For illness a Professional Authority Form (PAF) must be completed as part of the procedure.
  2. Application Form
Original + one set for each unit affected must be lodged at Student Enquiry Services (SES)  (in the Lincoln Building) within 5 days of the date of the relevant exam(s) during the end-year exam period .
The Application should cover the unit/units in which SC is being requested. Students are recommended to keep a copy of all documents lodged as proof of their submission to SES.

Can I get special consideration for a final exam?

If your Final Exam(s) is/are unavoidably disrupted you may apply for special consideration.
To be granted special consideration in a unit you must have satisfactory coursework.
If you sat the Final Exam and are granted special consideration:

  • you may still have to sit the supplementary exam
  • your performance in the supplementary exam would replace your performance in the Final Exam

What other useful information I may need to know?

  • In order for special consideration to be granted, the student must have satisfactory coursework.
  • Supporting documentation should be included in the application. If a special consideration is being sought on medical grounds, either a Professional Authority form (included within the Special Consideration form) OR a medical certificate that answers the questions on the Professional Authority Form must be attached.
  • Students who have missed assignments or class tests should contact the Lecturer in Charge to make alternative arrangements as well as completing the form.
